Why it Matters

If language is not clear and simple, users may have difficulty understanding it. People who are unfamiliar with the Web site's specific area or who are unfamiliar with computers may have problems understanding 'jargon'. In addition, it can be especially difficult for people with reading disorders or cognitive disabilities to find the relevant information if the content is not clear, simple, concise and well structured.

Using clear and concise language is not as simple as it may seem. Some basic rules are:

  • Try to avoid the use of jargon
  • Define acronyms and abbreviations
  • Use short sentences and short paragraphs.
